As I mentioned before on my ePortfolio, I only had a surface knowledge of geology before starting this course. The assignments I chose to share with you are the ones that I feel show both the expansion of my knowledge as well as a high quality in my work. The field trip assignment challenged me because I had little knowledge of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, etc. But I think I excelled because we were asked to present a visual brochure -- as a visual learner, I was able to effectively communicate what I learned through this brochure. The second assignment was the earthquake kit. When I first read the assignment, in all honesty, I scoffed and went through the rest of the module. As a Seattle native, we don't take earthquakes very seriously because they aren't a major threat in our area. But after watching the southern California preparation video and building the earthquake kit with my family, I have a new appreciation. The hurricane information poster also helped further my knowledge because it was a visual aid and I was able to effectively communicate my ideas and what I had learned. That is why I chose to share these three assignments with you.
There were two major challenges that I faced while taking this course. The first involves one of my goals, which was improving my time management. Balancing a full time job, three online classes, and traveling to accounting conferences was a challenge, to say the least. It wasn't easy. I had to schedule my week from when I going to eat, travel time, to setting time to study and work on my assignments. At the end of the day, what kept me motivated is wanting to perform at the high level of quality I hold myself too -- and if that meant losing a couple hours of sleep some days, so be it. The second major challenge was the group projects. As every college student knows, group projects are challenging because more often than not, there is always a member that doesn't pull their weight. Having an online group project is easily twice as hard -- people have different schedules, check canvas at different times, etc. I felt that in both of my projects, communication was a struggle. But from these challenges, I was able to improve my collaboration and communication skills.
I want to thank my peers and Dr. Kemble for a great class -- you have all helped expand my knowledge and thanks for sharing your ideas with such kindness and openness!
